Institute Enables Youngsters to Make Academic Strides

Reprinted from Sun Publications March 10, 2000

The Institute for Motivational Development, located in southwest Lombard, has been providing evaluation and treatment services for underachievers and their families since 1970. Its founder, Dr. Linnus Pecaut, and its staff of clinical psychologists, clinical social workers and a certified school psychologist work each year with hundreds of concerned parents and their adolescents, helping them identify, understand and overcome academic underachievement.

In recent years, the staff at IMD has seen more youngsters who are underachieving as a result of improper treatment of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder. Four out of 10 children who have been diagnosed with ADHD are still not succeeding academically because ADHD is not the correct diagnosis, ADHD is not the only diagnosis, current medication is incorrect, medication dosage was insufficient or child and parent counseling was sporadic or nonexistent.

In 1999, IMD added two new staff members to further serve the needs of families dealing with ADHD and other sources of academic underachievement. IMD has treated childern with ADHD for more than 30 years, offering second opinions on diagnosis and treatment.

Staff members at IMD believe that a child's success is far too important to leave to chance. They want to help parents and their underachieving children look to the future with anticipation rather than dread.
